The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina has ordered the detention of Mevlid Jasarevic on the very day he was scheduled to be released after completing a 15-year prison sentence.

The detention order comes after the United States formally requested Jasarevic's extradition to conduct criminal proceedings against him for the attempted murder of US officers or employees during his 2011 attack on the US Embassy in Sarajevo. The request was submitted by the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina following a diplomatic note from the Embassy of the United States received on 23 October 2026. According to the court decision, the extradition detention may last up to 18 days, through 13 November, or until a new judicial decision is reached. An appeal against the ruling does not suspend its execution.

Jasarevic was scheduled to regain his freedom this week after fully serving his 15-year sentence for terrorism, handed down for firing an automatic rifle at the US Embassy on 28 October 2011. His defense counsel, Alma Tabakovic, condemned the US request as a political persecution strategically timed to coincide with his planned release.

Addressing the court during Tuesday's hearing, a visibly shaken Jasarevic expressed his anguish, stating that he had expected to return home to his wife and son today.

"Please give me just a month or two with my son," Jasarevic pleaded, adding: "I feel sorry for my wife, she waited for me for 15 years, they could have at least notified me earlier because she expected me home today."
