Ecological disaster in Visegrad: Drina covered with thousands of tons of garbage

Huge amounts of garbage in the lake at the dam of the Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) on the Drina River represent a risk of ecological disaster in Visegrad and beyond in the Drina River basin, Anadolu Agency states, adding that environmental protection activists note that the solution to this problem is not easy and must involve the relevant authorities and services in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Municipal utility workers have been working for days on removing the garbage, but the river is bringing new quantities and it is clear that it is necessary to invest additional effort to stop the pollution of the Drina river, as well as other rivers in BiH and the region.

“This is actually a perfect image of the attitude towards waste in the three countries that are candidates for EU membership, namely Montenegro, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The waste that accumulates in front of the HPP dam comes from these three countries when the water level rises, mainly from the river Lim, which flows through Montenegro, then through Serbia and then Bosnia and Herzegovina. When the level of the Lim River rises after heavy rains, the water collects waste from numerous official and unofficial garbage dumps located on the banks,” Anes Podic, the head of the “Eco Action” Association, told Anadolu Agency.

Noting that this problem is not easy to solve, Podic said that the solution requires all three said countries to change their attitude towards waste completely.

He added that he does not see anyone in the region tackling the problem of garbage in the Drina River and its tributaries, stressing that the first step must be the removal of illegal landfills on the banks.

Podic recalled that the garbage from the Drina is taken to the Visegrad landfill, for which he said that it is a simple plain that was declared a landfill and that it itself is an ecological problem. This garbage, in turn, poses a risk to the fertile agricultural fields located in the river's basin, he said, adding that food from this region is sold across Bosnia and Serbia.
