EU approves €15 million military assistance package for BiH

The decision builds on previous bilateral assistance packages provided in 2021 and 2022.

The new measure is aimed at improving the interoperability and operational readiness of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Armed Forces, as well as their ability to contribute to EU Common Security and Defence Policy operations and missions, and to international coalitions.

According to the Council, the decision confirms the EU’s continued engagement with Bosnia and Herzegovina in the field of security and defence. It also reflects the country’s full alignment with the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy.

In a regional context, the European Union and Bosnia and Herzegovina have continued to reaffirm their commitment to strengthening cooperation in this area, including through Bosnia and Herzegovina’s participation in the Balkan Medical Task Force, a regional initiative also supported through the European Peace Facility.

The assistance package will provide the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina with individual protective equipment, chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear protection equipment, night-vision devices and cargo vehicles.

It may also cover related materials and services, including operational training, where needed.

The European Peace Facility was established in March 2021 to finance actions under the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy, with the aim of preventing conflicts, preserving peace and strengthening international security and stability.

It enables the EU to support military and defence capacities of third countries, as well as regional and international organisations.
