Federation of BiH bolsters HPV vaccination campaign

January marks Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting a disease primarily caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). In response, the Institute for Public Health of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) entity is conducting the public health and educational campaign “Small Step for Great Safety.” The initiative aims to enhance prevention and increase immunization coverage across the entity.

According to the Institute, vaccines are developed to prevent illness, complications, and mortality from infectious diseases. The HPV vaccine is specifically noted for significantly reducing the risk of developing certain types of cancer. In the Federation of BiH, more than 150 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually, and over 80 lose their lives to the disease.
"As the Director of the Institute and an infectious disease specialist, I firmly stand behind the fact that introducing HPV immunization is one of the most valuable public health steps forward in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina," stated Sinisa Skocibusic. He emphasized that the vaccine protects against genital warts, deadly cervical cancer, and other HPV-related malignancies, representing a vital investment in future generations.
With the support of the FBiH Government, the Institute began the HPV Immunization Program in 2022. The program recommends and provides free vaccination primarily for girls and boys aged 13 and 14. The treatment consists of two doses of the nonavalent vaccine, administered at least six months apart. Over the past three years, nearly 15,000 doses have been administered, showing a steady increase in immunization coverage.
