At the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2025, Sarajevo welcomed its first newborn of the year at the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS). The baby was delivered via cesarean section due to a high-risk pregnancy, according to Prim. Dr. Vahidin Katica, a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics.
“Everything went well, and the mother is doing fine. We are happy. Since the start of our shift, we’ve had eight deliveries. It has been a busy night, but I’m very pleased,” Dr. Katica told reporters. Acting Mayor Predrag Puharic presented a gift to the new mother to mark the special occasion.
KCUS reported its second birth of the year at 3:08 am, when another boy was born, measuring 52 centimetres and weighing 3.65 kilograms.
In Sarajevo’s General Hospital, the first baby of the year—a girl—was born at 5:00 am.
Meanwhile, in Mostar’s University Clinical Hospital (SKB), New Year’s Day began with the arrival of two healthy baby girls. The first, weighing 3.1 kilograms, was born at 12:30 am, followed just ten minutes later by a second girl delivered via cesarean section, weighing 3.85 kilograms.
In Banja Luka, at the University Clinical Center of Republika Srpska (UKC RS), the first baby of 2025 was Tadej, born right at midnight. He is the third child of Sanja Tadic from Banja Luka, weighing 3.09 kilograms and measuring 52 centimetres. Following tradition, Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik presented the family with a gold coin, which was handed over by UKC RS Director Vlado Djajic. The Mayor of Banja Luka, Drasko Stanivukovic, also gifted the family.
These joyful events mark a promising start to 2025, celebrating the newest additions to communities across Bosnia and Herzegovina.
