Fmr Croatian PM Jadranka Kosor on Srebrenica: We’re seeing the same thing today – Gaza is an example

In Zagreb, as in many cities across Croatia, the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide was commemorated. On this occasion, former Prime Minister of Croatia Jadranka Kosor, a long-time advocate for the truth about Srebrenica and someone who has for years openly opposed attempts to deny the genocide, spoke to N1.

“Thank you for recognizing me as someone who makes small contributions to ensure it is not forgotten, but also so that people learn what really happened in Srebrenica,” Kosor said at the beginning of the interview.
Speaking about the atmosphere in Potocari after the funerals, Kosor drew a parallel with Vukovar:
“Just like in Vukovar, after the large crowds, everything falls silent. This shows our attitude towards history. Moments like these must not be just anniversaries but an ongoing fight for the truth.”

Kosor also announced that she plans to visit Srebrenica personally – not on the anniversary, but in silence, without cameras and speeches.
“If the world had reacted in Vukovar in 1991 – Srebrenica in 1995 would not have happened”
Kosor pointed out the failures of the international community:
“In both cases, the world watched in silence. And today, we’re seeing the same thing – Gaza is an example. If we don’t learn from history, crimes will keep repeating.”

She particularly emphasized the importance of the words from EC President Ursula von der Leyen and High Representative Schmidt, who admitted that “in 1995 we did not intervene,” but added:
“That’s no longer enough. Such statements must carry weight – today, when children are dying in Gaza, we’re once again seeing the same hypocrisy.”
Speaking about the adoption of the UN resolution on the Srebrenica genocide, Kosor said:
“It’s a declarative act that reminds the world of what happened. But without political will, without action, all of this will be forgotten within a month.”

She added that the resolution would not have been possible without the work of BiH's Ambassador to the UN, Zlatko Lagumdžija:
“His role was crucial. Without him – it’s questionable whether there would have been a resolution at all.”
She also reflected on the issue of the missing and mass graves:
“As we saw in Vukovar, criminals hid bodies and relocated graves. That search, unfortunately, can go on indefinitely.”

“We who know the truth – we have a responsibility to defend it. Not once a year, but every single day”, she concluded.
