Foundation Mozaik is working to bring together relevant representatives of government and banks to urgently find a solution that will enable online card donations for all associations and foundations in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). This move aims to significantly increase the number and amount of donations to support affected populations.
The recent natural disasters that have hit Bosnia and Herzegovina have claimed over 20 lives. Solidarity is growing, with people around the world wanting to donate money to help those in need. However, most humanitarian organizations in the Federation of BiH cannot accept card donations, significantly limiting the funds needed to restore normalcy to affected communities.
Humanitarian organizations, which care for the most vulnerable members of society, are often the first to provide essential aid during natural disasters. They succeed in this mission solely due to the donations from compassionate people. However, due to unclear regulations, many donations do not reach their accounts or are reduced due to high banking fees, particularly for international transactions. Card donations would also enhance the transparency of recipient organizations.
Foundation Mozaik has contacted the Banking Agency of the Federation of BiH and received a positive opinion regarding the establishment of online card donations for associations and foundations.
The next necessary step is securing a positive stance from the Federal Ministry of Finance, which would provide banks with a framework to implement card donation options for associations and foundations in line with legal regulations.
In the coming days, a meeting is planned with the Federal Ministry of Finance to find a model for card donations in the Federation of BiH that complies with EU norms, the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Law, and the laws of the Federation of BiH. This model would allow people both abroad and in the country to easily and quickly donate to all humanitarian organizations in the Federation of BiH using cards.
Foundation Mozaik has also reached out to some of the largest humanitarian organizations in the country.
Miroslav Valenta of Caritas Bosnia and Herzegovina stated that in an increasingly digital world, online and card donations have become essential for many associations and social service providers. “These methods make it much easier for donors, especially those abroad, on whom many people in Bosnia and Herzegovina rely. On the other hand, it would simplify the fundraising process for us, especially at Caritas, at all levels, ensure greater transparency for donors, and reduce administrative costs, ultimately resulting in more resources and more efficient service delivery to those in need,” Valenta added.
According to Mersiha Imamovic from the International Forum of Solidarity EMMAUS, potential donors or associations and foundations without online card donation options are exposed to additional costs. “We often receive inquiries and hear dissatisfaction from donors who send donations via bank transfer, as the donation amount to the end user is reduced due to significant transaction fees. The number of donations has decreased over the years due to the inability to make card donations,” Imamovic added, as stated by Foundation Mozaik.
