Graffiti glorifying Ratko Mladic appears in Bratunac following his death
A graffiti glorifying convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic appeared this morning on a ruined building in Kosovska Street in Bratunac, near the local market. The inscription reads, "All Serbs are Ratko's soldiers," emerging a day after Mladic passed away in the detention unit of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals in The Hague while serving a life sentence.
Bratunac is located approximately ten kilometers from Srebrenica, an area deeply affected by the 1990s conflict where Mladic served as commander of the Republika Srpska Army. The Hague Tribunal's final ruling found him guilty of genocide in Srebrenica, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
The appearance of the graffiti highlights legal provisions introduced in July 2021 through amendments to the Criminal Code of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which criminalize the public denial, approval, or glorification of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. These offenses carry prison sentences ranging from six months to three years, with harsher penalties prescribed if the act disturbs public order or carries a threatening character.
Local police and the prosecutor's office have not yet issued statements regarding whether formal proceedings will be initiated. Bratunac has previously drawn public attention for similar incidents, including recent recordings from a local fair featuring audience reactions to songs containing wartime messages.
