The death of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic does not mark the end of the ideology he represented, according to Sonja Biserko, president of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia. Speaking to N1, Biserko emphasized that the reactions following his passing reveal a profound unwillingness in Serbia and Republika Srpska to confront court-established facts and the region's wartime legacy. She noted that the project of the Serbian world has been systematically promoted over the past fifteen years through official strategies and state policies, surviving Mladic himself.

Biserko directed criticism toward the international community, particularly Western governments, for maintaining a supportive stance toward Aleksandar Vucic while regional destabilization persisted. She described international reactions as belated and cynical, arguing that long-term appeasement of Belgrade has been consistently misinterpreted as weakness. Furthermore, she highlighted that the upcoming funeral of the former military commander risks becoming another major manifestation of glorification, demonstrating how deeply institutional and societal structures remain entangled with the politics of the 1990s.

Addressing the domestic climate, Biserko pointed out that the educational system, media, and cultural sphere continually propagate a narrative of victimhood, marginalizing wartime accountability and fueling historical revisionism. She noted that younger generations, having grown up in a toxic environment with limited factual awareness of the conflicts, are particularly vulnerable to prevailing political narratives.

Concluding her assessment, Biserko stressed that genuine societal sobering and confrontation with the past require robust international support for independent media and civil society, as the current political and institutional framework shows no capacity for generational departure from wartime policies.
