Kallas: We cannot tolerate attacks on the constitutional order in BiH
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, is on an official visit to Montenegro. From the capital Podgorica, she sent a clear message that there is no tolerance for attacks on the constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina and that political leaders must overcome, rather than deepen, divisions for the sake of regional stability.
Kallas began her first official visit to the Western Balkans in Podgorica, during which she will also visit Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina. She will arrive in Sarajevo on Tuesday, where she is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with BiH officials.
“We cannot tolerate attacks on unity and the constitutional order. Politicians have the responsibility to work together. We have increased the number of our troops on the ground. I think it’s important to prevent a security vacuum,” Kallas said at a press conference in Podgorica, which she held with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić after their meeting.
She also said that Montenegro is making good progress toward the European Union.
“These meetings allow us to confirm that. We welcome your commitment to reforms. As you know, there are no shortcuts—reforms must be implemented. I am proud that the EU, through Ambassador Sattler, helped establish an agreement between the government and the opposition,” Kallas emphasized.
She pointed out several issues, including Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine.
“I’m glad that Montenegro supports Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the UN Charter. You have generously accepted Ukrainian refugees. From what I understand, you have received more per capita than any other country in the world,” said Kallas, according to vijesti.me.
Kallas described the EU Growth Plan for the Western Balkans as support for the development of the region and its closer integration with the European Union.
Regarding her upcoming visit to BiH as part of this official Western Balkans tour, Kallas plans, in addition to meetings with members of the Presidency of BiH, Council of Ministers Chairwoman Borjana Kristo, and Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic, to visit EUFOR troops stationed in the country under the Althea mission. Their presence has been increased due to the current constitutional and security crisis in BiH.
