Elmedin Konakovic, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Mohammad Mustafa, the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine, during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Minister Konakovic conveyed Bosnia and Herzegovina's deep concern over the escalating armed conflicts and strongly condemned the violations of international humanitarian law by Israeli forces during the ongoing military operations in Gaza. He called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, alongside the provision of medical and humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. This, he emphasized, should be the starting point for a broader peace process that aims to achieve lasting peace. Bosnia and Herzegovina condemns all forms of violence, especially the suffering of civilians, and supports a resolution that leads to the creation of two equal states—Palestine and Israel.
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa acknowledged parallels between the current situation in Palestine and Bosnia and Herzegovina during the 1990s, noting that Bosnia’s experiences would be valuable for his country.
Prime Minister Mustafa expressed his gratitude for Bosnia and Herzegovina’s support for the recent UN General Assembly resolutions. In May 2024, Bosnia and Herzegovina backed a resolution that upgraded Palestine's status as a non-member observer state at the United Nations and recommended that the UN Security Council give a favourable opinion for full membership. In September 2024, Bosnia accepted the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel's policies in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. Bosnia also voted in favour of a resolution calling for Israel to end its illegal occupation of Palestinian territories within a year, as stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
