MeMe Detroit is the moniker of Birmingham-based multi-instrumentalist, Maria Rodriguez. Their high-octane brand of alternative rock combines the raw, grunge influences to emerge in the mid to late 80s, with the DIY, socially-minded activism associated with the riot movement of the early 90s.

MeMe Detroit is both a band and an essence all in one, started as a solo project. Today, it is a three-piece band from Birmingham, England. Kallum McEwan on drums, Ade Preston on bass and Maria, vocals and guitar. It's a rock band that just loves making music. “The whole point is being yourself, your atuhentic self!”

Speaking to N1 CNN's Ika Ferrer Gotić, Rodriguez explained how toxicity on social media made her take a break from it.

“I live a life of a vegan and we get a lot of criticism about it. There are actual people out there that will tell you how to live your life, what to eat and even how to raise your children! I'm fed up with the negativity and toxicity of it!” – she said.

‘Roaring At The Preachers’ is their latest, sonically charged single. A blazing foot stomping anthem, the track is oozing with scuzzy guitar riffs and a sing along hook-laden chorus. The track was inspired by Maria’s experiences with people who impose their beliefs upon others. Recognizing the hypocrisy and animosity that surrounds different belief systems, ‘Roaring At The Preachers’ is just over 3 and a half minutes’ worth of pure unadulterated anthemic angst. Maria used her writing to highlight the need for people to expel their negativity and, instead, embrace the light by showing love and empathy for others.

The Punk Alley Tour

Moxie Brawl is an award winning spicy inclusive dance theatre company and Maria is currently involved with. The entire show is for the younger generation of five years to teenagers’ age. Adults can always to do. It is a beautiful play that encourages young people to talk.

“Regardless of how old you are, your voice matters. We are here to inspire, motivate, educate but also entertain. I'm incredibly honored to be a part of this. One of the things that is so important is that this company is a safe space. We don't see that often in our industry.” – said Maria in the interview.

Maria also discussed living with a member of Blue Nation, Neil Murdoch and how their passion for music inspires them to be supportive of each other and their careers.
