European leaders will give a green light for the opening of the accession talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brussels media reported on Tuesday, a day before the European Council meeting that will discuss the issue.

According to Politico, a draft document dated March 19 stipulates the conditions for the accession talks, saying that the country can advance in the process only “once the relevant steps set out in the Commission's recommendation of 12 October 2022 are taken,” meaning that Bosnia needs to make more progress before it joins the bloc.

The EU granted Bosnia the candidate status in December 2022. Last week, the European Commission gave a recommendation to start the accession negotiations.

Politico also reported that the draft document will be discussed by EU ambassadors on Wednesday and by the EU leaders a day later.

Ahead of crucial decisions to be made this week, officials of Croatia, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Slovakia and Slovenia signed a letter calling on EU leaders to okay the opening of the membership talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
