The number of migrants in Bosnia was three times higher last year than this year, Security Minister Selmo Cikotic told N1 on Thursday.
Cikotic spoke about the migrant situation in light of the regional ministerial conference “Sarajevo Migration Dialogue”, which is being held in BiH’s capital between November 17 to 19, with the participation of ministers from the region, representatives of the EU and international organizations. The conference was organized by the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“The response to the conference is very good. Representatives of international organizations are also with us, representatives of the EU… We are having a meeting to consider all aspects through three sessions “, said Cikotic.
The first session includes a discussion on the migration management mechanism, the topic of the second session is border control, and future challenges will be discussed at the third session.
“We have no ambition or illusion that we will solve all these problems with this conference, but I think we will significantly improve mutual understanding in terms of the fact that we all have similar problems and that by moving problems from one territory to another we have not solved anything,” he said.
“The task of all our security systems is to preserve the security and protection of all rights and freedoms of our citizens, but at the same time not to lose sight of the fact that migrants who are on the move or in our territories are human beings. A large number of migrants ended their lives in the waters of the Mediterranean on that path to a better future,” Cikotic said.
He noted that, in the past few months, the number of migrants in the reception centres has been around 2,500, adding that his ministry believes there are also between 1,000 to 1,500 migrants staying outside migrant centres across the country.
Cikotic said that this number was about three times higher last year.
