Serbia’s Minister of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure Goran Vesic on Monday announced that he will officially resign on Tuesday in response to the November 1 tragic accident in the city of Novi Sad in which 14 people lost their lives and three were seriously injured when the main railway station outdoor roofing collapsed.
Vesic said he does not accept personal blame for the incident, but that he is resigning out of a sense of responsibility.
He revealed that he had offered his resignation to Prime Minister Milos Vucevic on the same day the accident occurred, and had also communicated this intention to President Aleksandar Vucic.
“I cannot accept blame for the deaths of 14 people because neither I nor the people who work with me bear any responsibility for this tragedy,” Vesic emphasized, adding that he is stepping down for moral reasons, as the accident happened within the scope of his ministerial duties.
Vesic’s resignation follows calls from the united opposition in Novi Sad for him, as well as Prime Minister Vucevic and Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric, to step down in the wake of the devastating roof collapse.
