Four ultramarathon runners set off Tuesday morning from Vukovar and will pass 227 kilometres from this eastern Croatian town in honour of the genocide victims from Srebrenica, Bosnian eastern town where they will end their five-day journey, a day before the July 11 commemoration.

The participants were seen off by Vukovar Mayor Ivan Penava and Chairman of the Council of Bosniak Minority of City of Zagreb Armin Hodzic.

In memory of the war victims of Srebrenica and Vukovar as well as all other innocent victims of the 1990-1995 wars in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Croatia, the Bosniak minority council has been organizing the event for ten straight years.

“The ultramarathon's goal is to keep the memory of the innocently killed during the Serb aggression on the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to honour the victims of Vukovar and Srebrenica,” said the organisers.

The runners will pass their journey in five stages and will run through Vinkovci, Brcko, Janja and Zvornik before they arrive in Srebrenica.

The event is sponsored by Bosniak and Croat members of BiH tripartite Presidency Sefik Dzaferovic and Zeljko Komsic, President of Croatia Zoran Milanovic, Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomasevic, and the City of Sarajevo, with the financial support of the Turkish development agency TIKA.

The remains of 19 genocide victims will be buried in a mass ceremony on July 11 at the Potocari Memorial Centre.

The Organising Committee announced that the 26th commemoration for the victims will take place under the restrictions imposed during the epidemic. Officials will not be allowed to attend but will have an opportunity to send a video message, which will be played on commemoration day.
