Speaking ahead of the informal meeting of heads of state or government in Granada on Friday, European Union's top officials confirmed that one of the main topics of the meeting will include enlargement.

“We have to work in a tailored approach, there are ten candidates and each one needs a specific approach,” said High Representative Josep Borrell.

He recalled that Ukraine has also become one of the candidates for the membership and will “push” the other countries on the way there.

“Ukraine is coming the last, is pushing all the ones who were waiting before,” he stressed.

Borrell also noted that the countries will start moving quickly but each in their specific way.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also addressed media prior to the meeting, commenting among other issues on one of the main topics of the meeting – enlargement.

“Of course the candidate countries have to do homework to access the European Union, but we as the European Union have also to do homework and so far the Commission will work on different policy reviews in different fields so that we can make sure that we are ready also for enlargement,” she said.

According to the official statement issued by Brussels, EU leaders are gathered in Granada, Spain, to launch discussions on priorities for the years ahead. By taking stock of past work on how to enhance the EU’s strategic autonomy, the discussions will help prepare the EU’s next strategic agenda, a five-year policy plan to equip the EU with general political guidelines and directions.

The informal European Council meeting takes place following the third meeting of the European Political Community.
