Measles epidemic declared in Banjaluka

Banjaluka Health Care Institute declared a measles epidemic in the territory of the City of Banjaluka.

The epidemic was declared due to the spread of measles among the children living in the “Rada Vranjesevic” orphanage in Banjaluka. A total of nine patients have been infected.  

The first case of measles was recorded in April and it was immediately reported to the Banjaluka Health Care Institute. The patient was hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Clinic in Banjaluka.

After the first case of the measles outbreak, eight other children showed the same symptoms. All the children were in contact with the first patient from the orphanage. Six of them are currently hospitalized at the Infectious Diseases Clinic while other children are isolated in a special room at the orphanage.

Of the eight newly infected children, six have not been inoculated, while two did not receive all the inoculation they were supposed to. All the diseased children are currently stable and without any complications.

The total number of diseased patients with measles in Republika Srpska entity, one of two semi-autonomous entities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is 31.
