Bosnia’s Serb leader: I’ll demand end of OHR

Tanjug / AP, Darko Vojinovic

Bosnia’ Serb leader who, according to the preliminary results of the Sunday’s election won a seat in the country's tripartite Presidency, said his first request would be for the Office of High Representative to be abolished in the country, the Beta news agency reported on Monday.

Milorad Dodik also said he would take part in the Presidency’s sessions via video link from Istocno Sarajevo (Eastern Sarajevo.)

He added that he would put the Republika Srpska (Serb-dominated entity in Bosnia, RS) flag into the Presidency’s office in Sarajevo, and meet Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic before his other co-members from the Bosniak and Croat peoples.

The High Representative for Bosnia, together with the Office of the High Representative (OHR) in the country, was created immediately after the signing of the Dayton Agreement which ended the 1992–95 war in Bosnia. Their role is to oversee the civilian implementation of the Dayton agreement.

They also serve to represent the countries involved in the implementation of the Dayton Agreement through the Peace Implementation Council (PIC).

Since 1995, all High representatives were from the European Union member states, and their principal deputies were from the US.

The abolishment of such a position is impossible without the consent of all three members of the Presidency and the international community.

However, Dodik told Serbia’s state RTS television that if the other two wanted to accept his request, they would have a dialogue. “If we want to have a bit stronger Bosnia, we have to throw out the High Representative.”

He added that in Bosnia “there is an old American administration present with the work based on the past” and that he would try to send a letter to the US President Donald Trump seeking his support for the annulment of the High Representative post.

Dodik said he knew “that Russia is for it, as well as the majority of other countries, including Serbia and Croatia. It only remains for the US to agree.”

In the meantime, his opponent from the Serb nation, Mladen Ivanic, the so far member to the Presidency, announced his request for the recount of the votes due to “illogicalness” in several municipalities.
