“Immediately upon receiving information about the incident, Croatia’s diplomatic and consular service undertook all activities within its competence to establish the precise facts,” the ministry said.
Iran seized two container ships attempting to leave the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz after opening fire on them and another vessel, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
The ministry said it is “in constant contact with the families of Croatian seafarers, as well as relevant Croatian and international bodies”, adding that its priority is “the protection of the interests, rights and safety of Croatian citizens”.
“We continue to closely monitor the development of the situation and take all necessary steps within our authority,” it said, noting the sensitivity of the case.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps accused the seized vessels MSC Francesca, sailing under the Panamanian flag, and Epaminondas, sailing under the Liberian flag, of operating without required permits and manipulating their navigation systems.
Alongside the Croatians, four Montenegrin seafarers are also on board MSC Francesca, Montenegro’s Maritime Minister Filip Radulovic said, adding they and the rest of the crew were in good health and safe, with negotiations between the shipping company and Iranian authorities ongoing.
Tehran has imposed restrictions on vessels using the strait at the southern entrance to the Gulf following US and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February, leading to a near standstill in traffic.
