Member of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency Sefik Dzaferovic condemned the statements Croatian President Zoran Milanovic made about the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide which came days after the main Croat ethnic party in Bosnia supported an initiative to annul a law banning genocide denial in the country.
“Srebrenica is not the same as the Holocaust, it is not the same as Jasenovac, it is a serious crime with elements of genocide and the court has determined that. But I don't need a court decision. No international court can be treated like holy scripture,” Milanovic said.
“Five thousand, eight thousand or 80 people is not the same. It’s not the same if something happens in two days so you try to cover it up or if it happens continuously and systematically, it’s not the same if it happens in gas chambers or with machetes,” he said.
Dzaferovic said that Milanovic made the statements in order to justify recent moves by the Croat Democratic Union in Bosnia (HDZ BiH).
Members of the party, led by Dragan Covic, expressed support for the initiative of Serb representatives in Bosnia’s House of Peoples to abolish the law making glorification of war criminals and denial of war crimes, including genocide, a punishable offence.
“With the embarrassing and inadmissible comments on the Srebrenica genocide, which represent an attempt to minimize this crime, Milanovic obviously wants to mitigate the justified condemnations and contempt of the European, Bosnian and Croatian public addressed to Dodik's party and HDZ BiH, after they tried to challenge the law banning denial of genocide and war crimes,” Dzaferovic said.
