The Croat member of Bosnia and Herzegovina's Presidency, Zeljko Komsic, said on Wednesday there won't be any new negotiations on amending the election law in his country that would be mediated by European Union officials, and the claims to the opposite are just some people's wishes.

Komsic told reporters in Sarajevo that there were some indications that European Council President Charles Michel could come to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the days ahead, but there will not be any talks on amending the election law.

“There is no such announcement and even if there were, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Michel are far too smart to be dragged into that type of mud like we have been, also by completely unprepared talks about amendments to the election law, by Zagreb's and the HDZ's blackmail when it comes to that,” Komsic said. He confirmed that he would once again run as a candidate for the country's presidency from the Croat ranks.

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic earlier announced that he expects a senior EU official to arrive in BiH with the aim of motivating talks on amendments to the election law, while the president of the HDZ BiH party, Dragan Covic, later said that he expects the visit to occur on 22 May.

Nobody said who would be coming from the EU.

Prime Minister Plenkovic and Croatian President Zoran Milanovic strongly advocate an agreement on amendments to BiH's election law so that the October 2 election is held under new rules, according to which Croats would have a guaranteed right to elect their own representatives in government bodies such as the BiH Presidency and the House of Peoples in the Federation entity's parliament.

After months-long negotiations fell through, BiH's Central Electoral Commission decided to nevertheless call an election pursuant to the provisions of the incumbent election law.

Komsic said today that the negotiations were doomed to fail because they were set on the wrong foundations.

“Naturally, that's why the whole story had to fail. And as for the ambitions of Zagreb, President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic regarding amendments to the election law, and then Dragan Covic, HDZ BiH and HNS for someone to come here once again and force a new round of negotiations on amendments to the election law, I would say, ‘let them dream on’,” Komisic said.
