Bosnia and Herzegovina Presidency member Zeljko Komsic sent a letter to Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament addressing recent remarks made by Croatian MEP Zeljana Zovko. Komsic accused Zovko of interfering in Bosnia’s internal affairs, citing her statements as an attack on the country’s sovereignty and its European aspirations.

Komsic specifically criticized Zovko for urging Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic to “deliver the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.” He described this as an effort to achieve political goals reminiscent of the joint criminal enterprise outlined in the ICTY’s “Prlic et al.” verdict, which condemned attempts to create mono-ethnic territories in Bosnia under Croatia’s control.

“Such statements also reject rulings by the European Court of Human Rights, which confirmed the existence of ethno-territorial discrimination in Bosnia and Herzegovina. These positions contradict the EU’s values and norms as outlined in the Lisbon Treaty,” Komsic wrote, urging the European Parliament to condemn such views.

Zovko’s remarks, made at an HDZ campaign event in Split, sparked controversy. She stated that Croats are increasingly unable to remain in Bosnia and Herzegovina, claiming they are being forced to relocate to Croatia.

Her comments also drew condemnation from the Institute for Genocide Research Canada, which characterized her statements as part of a longstanding Croatian nationalist agenda. “Bosnia and Herzegovina has a rich history of statehood and freedom, unlike Croatia, which has a much shorter historical tradition of sovereignty,” the Institute declared, rejecting Zovko’s claims as divisive and untruthful.

The incident has further heightened tensions in regional political discourse, with calls for the EU to address the matter.
