The Russian Embassy in Bosnia has issued a diplomatic note officially stating that Russia does not accept the new international administrator in BiH, High Representative Christian Schmidt.
Schmidt took over the post of High Representative in BiH, tasked with overseeing the civilian implementation of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement, in the beginning of August.
According to the diplomatic note from the embassy, “the UN Security Council did not formally agree to the candidacy of Christian Schmidt” and therefore “the Russian Federation does not consider his appointment as High Representative legitimate.”
On August 3, Schmidt met with two members of the BiH Presidency, Zeljko Komsic and Sefik Dzaferovic, and said that he plans to be active during his mandate and that he will not just “sit, wait and watch” the developments in the country.
The Serb member of the tripartite Presidency, Milorad Dodik, did not attend this meeting and also said he considers Schmidt’s appointment illegitimate.
