A Sarajevo court acquitted Asim Sarajlic, a top official of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA), as well as two others in a first-instance ruling of corruption charges.

The court ruled that it could convict Sarajlic and co-defendants Sabahudin Delalic and Muhamed Sehovic based on illegally procured evidence.

The case is based on a leaked telephone conversation which appears to feature Sarajlic discussing a corrupt deal.

According to the indictment of the Sarajevo cantonal prosecutor's office, Sarajlic and Delalic promised to use their influence within the political party and hire his wife if he voted for Fikret Prevljak to be the president of the SDA in Sarajevo.

The recording was published by Prevljak’s opponent at the time, Semir Efendic.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury sanctioned Sarajlic last year.

“Sarajlic was designated pursuant to E.O. 14033 for being responsible for or complicit in, or for having directly or indirectly engaged in, corruption related to the Western Balkans, including corruption by, on behalf of, or otherwise related to a government in the Western Balkans, or a current or former government official at any level of government in the Western Balkans, such as the misappropriation of public assets, expropriation of private assets for personal gain or political purposes, or bribery”, the decision said.
