United Group, the leading telecommunications and media company in Southeast Europe, has made a significant stride in green energy production with an initial €120 million investment in Bulgaria. This bold initiative signals a new era of sustainability, reinforcing the company’s position as an industry leader in innovation and climate action.

Launching a green energy revolution

United Group’s investment focuses on building three solar power plants and one wind farm in Bulgaria. By 2027, these projects are expected to supply 160% of the company’s energy needs in Bulgaria, meet 65% of its total energy consumption, and eliminate approximately 120,000 tons of CO2 emissions from the Bulgarian energy system annually. Together, these projects will have a combined capacity of 124 MW, generating 310,000 MWh per year—enough to power around 60,000 households annually. Additionally, the initiative includes a state-of-the-art battery system capable of storing 1.5 times more energy than the maximum production capacity.

This ambitious step underscores United Group’s commitment to accelerating Bulgaria’s transition to clean energy while paving the way for a more sustainable future across Southeast Europe.

Commitment to sustainability

Viktoriya Boklag, CEO of United Group, shared her vision for this milestone:

“This investment is more than a business decision—it’s a promise to future generations. By harnessing the power of the sun and wind, we are not only fueling our operations but driving change. United Group is proud to lead the way in green energy production. Together, we are building a brighter, greener future for Bulgaria and Southeast Europe.”

Innovation at the core

Since entering the Bulgarian market in 2020, United Group has driven progress with €2.5 billion invested in cutting-edge technology, including Bulgaria’s first 10 GIGA optical network, the largest commercial 5G network, and the country’s first unlimited 5G mobile plans. This renewable energy initiative is a natural extension of the company’s commitment to creating a meaningful impact by combining technological excellence with environmental responsibility.

The first solar power plant near Stara Zagora is already operational, with two additional plants planned near Kyustendil and Vidin. A wind farm in northeastern Bulgaria will set new regional standards for innovation and efficiency. All projects are strategically designed to minimize environmental impact by repurposing industrial land and integrating advanced energy storage systems.

A vision for a sustainable future

This investment solidifies United Group’s role as a catalyst for change, aligning with the EU’s climate goals and contributing to Bulgaria’s green energy transformation. The company’s ultimate aim is to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2040, reinforcing its leadership in sustainability.

A transformative investment for Bulgaria

Nikolai Andreev, CEO of Vivacom, highlighted the importance of this initiative:

“United Group’s investment is a transformative moment for all of Bulgaria. It strengthens the country’s energy resilience, stimulates economic growth, and firmly positions Bulgaria as a leader in renewable energy. We are excited to see the impact this project will have on our country and the region.”

Grozdan Karadjov, Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications, emphasized during the event announcing the investment:

“In the past 20 years, the share of green energy in the European Union’s overall energy mix has tripled. Bulgaria is following this trend, but the share of renewables in the country’s final energy consumption remains less than a quarter. Investments in this area are therefore critical for the sustainable development of Bulgaria’s economy.”
