How does the UN see the current events in the Middle East, how big is the responsibility of Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition partners and how big the responsibility of the Palestinian leaders and the international community are some of the questions answered by UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories Francesca Albanese in an interview with N1.
Commenting on the latest incidents at Al Aqsa mosque, she said that the attacks on Haram al-Sharif were “reckless” and beyond violating of the status quo agreement that Israel is obliged to comply with.
The attack was neither unprecedented nor isolated, she noted, reminding that more than 90 Palestinians and some 15 Israelis lost their lives this year.
“These engineered attacks by Israel, these engineered provocations by Israel of the Palestinians in the holiest sites of the holy sites for them, in the holiest month for them, which provoke a suicidal reaction, which is rockets from Gaza, and then bombings from Israel into Gaza; these happen in the context of an occupation which operates, the Israeli occupation reach operates outside what is permitted by the international law. And this is the cause of the problem,” she said.
Albanese also commented on the allegations that Netanyahu will allow Itamar Ben-Gvir, one of the most radical politicians there, to form the National guard under his control and what does that mean for Palestinians.
