Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH) leader Dragan Covic welcomed a resolution adopted by Croatia's parliament aimed at "strengthening the political position of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina," saying he expected Croatian institutions to act in line with its provisions.

Croatia's parliament on Wednesday passed the resolution, backed by the ruling majority and the right-wing opposition, supporting the establishment of a separate Croat electoral constituency in BiH and condemning the outvoting of Croats in the country's tripartite presidency and state and entity houses of peoples.

"It is good that it was adopted. I am pleased that it has gained a new dimension, as Croatian institutions now have an obligation towards this resolution," Čović told RTV Herceg-Bosna in Mostar.

Bosniak and civic parties based in Sarajevo criticised the resolution, saying it amounted to interference in BiH's internal affairs.

Covic said it must be ensured that one ethnic group cannot elect political representatives of another, and rejected claims by Foreign Minister Elmedin Konakovic that Bosniaks, rather than Croats, faced discrimination.

He also called for the closure of the Office of the High Representative in BiH and for greater responsibility to be assumed by domestic politicians.
