US mid-term elections usually bring big changes and make it difficult for the current US president. However, the elections that will be held next week will not only have an effect on the American body politic, but also on the geopolitical scene due to the potential influence of former President Donald Trump. We spoke to The Lincoln Project's Andrew Wilson about the election, Trump and the Republicans, Biden and the Democrats, foreign policy and social media.
N1: Over the last six years, or even more than that, former president Donald Trump has incited all of this starting in United States and your project, the Lincoln project is fighting from the Republican side what Trump is doing to United States. How you are judging this election campaign now?
ANDREW WILSON, THE LINCOLN PROJECT: Well, we expect that Republicans will take control of the US House. That's sort of a built in function of the American political redistricting system that happens every 10 years with the US census. It also speaks to the historical fact that midterms are almost always a referendum on the party of the president. The Senate is more of an open question. We are fairly confident that Democrats will maintain control of the Senate, but there's been a lot of recent polling that shows that GOP candidates are gaining strength. That said, I think we have some reason to believe that these polls are overestimating Republican performance. And additionally, this morning there was a poll t that showed that it may not be the massive red wave, that Republican media has been talking about for the last three weeks.
N1: But we know that inside every party we have fractions and different opinions and different views of things. But in Republican party, we have now on one side McCarthy in the House, we have McConnell in the Senate, we have all those who are coming with the Trump ideas up on the scene. And we have on the other side, Liz Cheney, who's I would say a leader of moderates in Republican party. How that interfight in GOP can damage those results or even help to one or either sides to make their goals on these elections?
ANDREW WILSON, THE LINCOLN PROJECT: I think that the MAGA Republicans and the establishment, really what you're gonna see after this election, they have differing views on a lot of things. But in particular, the Ukraine issue has become a point of contention between the Trump side of the party and then McConnell side of the party. The Trump side of the Republican party has suggested they would want to cut off funding to Ukraine. But the reality is there's a lot of roadblocks for them. First and foremost, Joe Biden is still gonna be president and Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell are explicitly supporting Ukraine. And most polls show that Americans support Ukraine. So we can expect that the party will fracture more. But it looks to be that Trump is still the leader. He is still the defacto head of the Republican party. And the McConnell side has been getting weaker and weaker. And players like Kevin McCarthy and Marjorie Taylor Green are gaining strength and power and they will have leadership positions in the future.
