Thousands of antifascists gathered on Saturday to mark the 82nd anniversary of the "Igman March" with the traditional march and laid wreaths at the Memorial to the members of the First Proletarian Brigade on the Great Field in Igman.
The breakthrough of the 1st Proletarian Brigade through the German siege was made on the night of 27th January 1942 over Igman, the mountain overlooking Sarajevo.
The brigade marched through deep snow as temperatures hit -30 Centigrade. The exhausted soldiers started to fall asleep while walking and began to hallucinate.
However, the unit managed to escape to the eastern town of Foca.
The president of the Association of Antifascists and Fighters in the People’s Liberation War (SABNOR) in Sarajevo Canton and the president of the Organizing Committee of the Igman March, Mirsad Catic, told the Fena news agency that they are proud to be the organizers of this gathering and that people from all over Europe came to participate. Among them are delegations from all countries of the former Yugoslavia, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Austria, and he expects more than 10,000 visitors at the central event on Veliki polje throughout the day.
“After Lisbon, this is the largest anti-fascist demonstration in all of Europe. We are proud of the fact that for many years, people – anti-fascists recognize and that those with good souls, with a big heart and pride, bring their joy to Igman, and all this together creates a beautiful picture that the anti-fascists send to the world”, said Catic.
