Bosnia and Herzegovina leaders pay tribute to Pope Francis

Following the announcement of Pope Francis' passing, leaders from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region expressed condolences, highlighting his historic role as a symbol of peace, dialogue, and solidarity. His dedication to the poor, interfaith dialogue, and universal human values left a profound impact on the Western Balkans.

Bosnia and Herzegovina joins the world in mourning a spiritual leader who shaped an era with his messages of peace, justice, and compassion.

Zeljko Komsic: "His words of dialogue and solidarity will remain with us"


Bosnian Presidency member Zeljko Komsic sent condolences to Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, stating:

"With great sorrow, I received the news that Pope Francis is no longer with us. I had the honour of meeting him and witnessing his kindness. His words about dialogue and solidarity will always be etched in my memory."

Komsic recalled the pope's strong support for Bosnia and Herzegovina, emphasising his dedication to coexistence and interfaith understanding, stating that his messages will continue to guide many.

Milorad Dodik: "The world has lost a great peacemaker"


President of Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik expressed condolences on X, writing:

"I extend my deepest condolences to all priests and faithful of the Catholic Church on the passing of Pope Francis. The world has lost a great peacemaker—a man who placed faith in the service of people, not elites. Pope Francis was a voice for justice, equality, and hope for those without power but with faith."

Dragan Covic: "The world has lost a great man”


Leader of the Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH) Dragan Covic called Pope Francis' death a great loss for the world:

"With deep sorrow, I received the news of the passing of the Holy Father. The world has lost a great man who dedicated his life to love, solidarity, and peace. May his soul rest in eternal peace."

Denis Zvizdic: "His visit to Bosnia was a symbol of hope"


Bosnia’s House of Representatives Chair Denis Zvizdic recalled the Pope’s commitment to interfaith dialogue and human dignity, stating:

"Pope Francis will be remembered for his dedication to the poor, his strong message of solidarity, and calls for preserving universal human values. His visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2015 left a profound impact and was a powerful symbol of support for peace and coexistence."

Sevlid Hurtic: "He was a symbol of hope"


Bosnia’s Minister for Human Rights Sevlid Hurtic described Pope Francis as a symbol of hope and a moral compass for modern society, emphasising his tireless dedication to the marginalised, the poor, and those fighting for justice.

"Pope Francis embodied values of compassion, humility, and unwavering commitment to human dignity. He advocated for the rights of the oppressed, regardless of nationality, religion, or background. His leadership inspired millions around the world, including here in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where his message of interfaith unity and solidarity resonated deeply."

Hurtic recalled the Pope’s historic visit to Bosnia in 2015, highlighting how his presence reinforced the country’s vision of coexistence, religious tolerance, and respect for diversity.
