Bisera Turkovic, Bosnia's Foreign Minister, said the Brussels is considering the measures that need to be applied in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that everyone agrees they need to act urgently.
“Everyone is very concerned about the crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Turkovic who is on an official visit to Brussels, where she met with the European Union's senior officials to discuss the situation in the country that has recently raised concerns.
The visit comes amidst the tensions that emerged after Serb member of Bosnia's tripartite Presidency Milorad Dodik announced withdrawal of Serb-dominated region Republika Srpska from the state institutions, mainly as a response to the genocide denial ban imposed by the international peace envoy.
Dodik denies the genocide in Srebrenica, despite the rulings of two international courts regarding the mass killing of Bosniak men in the eastern town in 1995.
According to Turkovic, there is a joint stance in Brussels that urgent action is needed.
“It seems that it has not been decided yet which measures will be applied, and it is in the process of making,” she told N1.
Turkovic said that the sanctions are “on the table” and will be considered if the measures give no results.
She deems that Dodik was not taken for serious before or now but that those powers who support him are.
“And those correlations might be visible more today than they were yesterday,” she added.
Turkovic also said that both Europe and Western Balkans are in a new geopoitical situation and that everyone will witness more of tense situations.
There is a solution but it remains unknown if the wish to uphold the EU principles will prevail, she concluded.
The minister among other EU officials met Neighborhood and Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, Managing Director at the European External Action Service Angelina Eichhorst, who reiterated support to Bosnia's sovereignty and integrity, and stressed the need to implement necessary reforms.
Thanking @BiseraTurkovic for keeping #BiH on EU path. The #EU firmly stands w/ #BosniaAndHerzegovina as a single, united, sovereign country. Breaking political stalemate, strengthening institutions, providing security prosperity for all people in #BiH needs responsible leadership https://t.co/aBrTFUD72U
