Bosnian wartime military commander sentenced to eight years in prison

The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina sentenced former Bosnian military commander Sakib Mahmuljin to eight years in prison, having previously revoked the first-instance verdict that sentenced him to ten years in prison.

The former commander of the 3rd Corps of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina was convicted after the court decided that he failed to prevent the murders and inhumane treatment of the Serbs conducted by ‘El Mujahedeen’ unit in the area of Vozuca and Zavidovici in 1995.

The Appellate Chamber annulled the first-instance verdict in November 2021 and ordered a new trial, which started with an appeal procedure, with the prosecution and defence teams presenting their proposals.

The prosecution complained about the length of the first-instance verdict for the deaths of captured Serb soldiers and inhumane treatment of prisoners, civilians and those wounded, while the defence team filed appeals to all parts of the verdict, including the violations of criminal procedure.
