Dusko Suvara, who was sentenced to six years in prison for rape and inhumane treatment in 1992 in the area of Glamoč, surrendered on Monday morning at the premises of the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) in Banja Luka, from where he will be sent to serve his prison sentence, Detektor.ba learned.

After he was previously convicted by the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina for crimes against the civilian population and had been on the run since March, Suvara surrendered and will be sent to serve his sentence, his defence attorney Slobodan Peric and SIPA confirmed for Detektor.ba.

Peric said that Suvara was supposed to report to serve his sentence on December 27 last year. After he failed to do so, the State Court issued an international warrant for him in March of this year, Peric said, confirming for Detektor.ba that Suvara contacted me from Turkey.

“He was previously sentenced to 20 years in prison and had to be given a single sentence of imprisonment. He has already served this sentence. That was the reason why he hid, that is, he did not want to go to serve his sentence for seven months, hoping that the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, that is, the Supreme Court of the Republika Srpska entity, would decide on his appeal, i.e. his request,” Peric said.

According to the BiH Court verdict from May 27 last year, Suvara was found guilty of raping two Bosniak women in the area of Glamoc in May and June 1992 as a member of the Republika Srpska Army (VRS). This verdict was confirmed by the Appellate Chamber of the BiH Court after rejecting as unfounded the appeals of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH and the defendant's defence attorney against the first-instance verdict.
