It has been five years since the tragic death of Selma Agic and Edita Malkoc, two Sarajevo University students, who were killed in a traffic accident as they were about to cross the street. Families, friends, students and other citizens gathered around the memorial built in their honour in front of the Faculty of Philosophy to paid their respect.

“It is only getting harder and harder. I cannot believe it has been five years,” said Enesa, Edita Malkoc's sister.

She refused to comment on the trial for the death of her sister and her friend, adding that they only want to remember them with dignity.

“Every memory of my Edita brings smile on my face,” she added.

On this day, five years ago, Edita and Selma, best friends and exemplary students, were about to cross the street on a pedestrian crossing when a car speeding at 105 kilometres per hour passed through red light and hit them. Selma was killed at the site and Edita succumbed to injuries at the Sarajevo Clinical Centre.

Sanjin Sefic, the driver, left the crime scene and escaped to Serbia, where he was arrested two days later. He was extradited to Bosnian authorities two months later.

After a four-year trial he was sentenced to 17 and a half years in prison.

Sefic's arrest was accompanied by a series of protests, in which the citizens demanded stricter laws and traffic regulations, conveying a message that this was not an accident but a murder.
