FIFA under fire after controversial reversal of Balogun suspension following White House pressure

FIFA has come under heavy criticism after taking the extraordinary step of suspending the automatic one-match ban imposed on United States striker Folarin Balogun following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision has sparked outrage among Bosnian football officials, fans and observers, particularly because the incident involved Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic, who could have suffered a serious injury after Balogun's high challenge.
During the Round of 32 match between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United States, Balogun was sent off after VAR reviewed his challenge on Muharemovic. Television footage showed the American forward planting his studs high on the Bosnian defender's ankle, an incident many considered dangerous enough to justify a straight red card.
Despite the automatic suspension that accompanies a red card under FIFA regulations, the governing body later announced that, under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the implementation of Balogun's one-match suspension would be deferred for a probationary period of one year. The decision allows the American striker to play in the Round of 16 against Belgium while the suspension remains conditional.
The move immediately raised questions about FIFA's consistency and independence.
According to multiple reports, the reversal followed intense lobbying by U.S. Soccer officials and direct political involvement from the White House. Reports indicate that President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the incident, while White House officials and U.S. Soccer representatives also reportedly pressured FIFA to reconsider the disciplinary decision.
The reports further state that U.S. Soccer argued the VAR intervention had been incorrectly applied and even threatened legal action before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if FIFA refused to reconsider the case.
FIFA ultimately announced that Balogun's suspension would not be served immediately, an outcome many critics described as unprecedented in a World Cup.
The decision prompted widespread criticism, with many pointing out that Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic could have suffered a broken leg as a result of the challenge. Critics also questioned why the disciplinary sanction was effectively softened despite the seriousness of the foul.
Following FIFA's announcement, Donald Trump publicly thanked world football's governing body on his Truth Social platform.
"Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!" Trump wrote after the decision became official.
The case has become one of the biggest controversies of the tournament, with critics arguing that FIFA's disciplinary process appeared vulnerable to political influence, while supporters of the decision insist justice was ultimately served.
For Bosnia and Herzegovina, however, the controversy remains centred on the dangerous tackle against Muharemovic and the belief that the rules were not applied equally once political pressure entered the equation.
