The special envoy of the German Government for the countries of the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin, stayed in Banja Luka Where he met with Republika Srpska (RS) entity President Milorad Dodik whom he said "secessionist policies, attacks on the state institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the narrowing of the freedom of the media and civil society" are unacceptable and will not to lead BiH towards EU membership.

“We talked about the continuation of the process of regional economic integration of the Western Balkans within the framework of the Berlin process. The ratification of the third agreement on mobility, which has not yet been reached, as well as the BiH’s accession to the Regional Declaration on Energy Security, are of key importance for this”, Sarrazin said.

“In addition, I once again explained to him [Dodik] the reasons for the successive and contractual completion of four large projects in Republika Srpska financed by Germany. In doing so, we were guided by two different aspects,” he noted. “First of all, regarding the political crisis caused by officials in Republika Srpska, the government of the Federal Republic of Germany, unfortunately, had no political space. Secessionist politics, attacks on the state institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the media and on civil society have consequences. That's why we made the decision to complete four important infrastructure projects with a total value of € 105 million (over 205 million Bosnian marks).”

The second principle is Germany’s firm support of all the people in BiH. For this reason, he added, Germany will continue the implementation of all other projects in the RS, such as cooperation with civil society, and projects in the field of social care or humanitarian aid, to the full extent and without restrictions, if there is a need for it.

“The key to continued cooperation in other areas is in the hands of Mr. Dodik. I told him that again today. Conducting a secessionist policy, attacks on the state institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina and narrowing the freedom of the media and civil society are unacceptable and will not lead this country to the EU. We strongly support High Representative Christian Schmidt. I made that clear to Mr. Dodik again,” Sarrazin concluded.
