The six suspects accused of abuse of power and trading in influence as part of a tender rigging scheme, including House of Representatives MP Enver Bijedic, were released by the Tuzla Canton Prosecutor’s Office on Friday after they were questioned by state police.
Six people, including BIjedic, who is also the leader of the Social Democrats (SDBiH) party, were arrested on Thursday morning by Bosnia’s State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) during the raids of several residential and business buildings in Tuzla, Gracanica and Zivinice.
The operation was the result of an investigation into possible illegal activities regarding the setting up of a tender, worth millions of Bosnian Marks, for a company from Gracanica to drill exploration and exploitation wells in the Tetima rock salt deposit, which is part of of the Tuzla Salt Mine.
Tenders for this operation were allegedly annulled several times in order to benefit this company, which ended up with the company winning the bid although it has neither the personnel nor material resources to perform these works.
According to prosecutors, Bijedic was the leader of the group.
“An investigation has been opened against these persons in the Prosecutor's Office, which refers to illegalities in setting up a tender in the amount of about 5.5 million Bosnian Marks for the company “Minning and Drilling” from Gracanica for works on exploration and exploitation wells in the Tetima rock salt deposit in the Tuzla Salt Mine,” prosecutors said.
“The investigation confirmed the well-founded suspicion that the tenders were annulled several times in that period although a qualified and credible company from Bulgaria repeatedly had offers that were about 2 million Bosnian Marks cheaper than the Gracanica company, in order to continuously negotiate and insist that this company gets the job,” they said.
