In an open letter to the Chairman of Bosnia’s tripartite Presidency, Milorad Dodik, the Mothers of Srebrenica noted that his recent letter to the head of the war crimes court in the Hague practically means that he accepted the ruling against convicted war criminal Radovan Karadzic and urged him to support the adoption of a law banning genocide denial in the country.
Local media reported on Thursday that Dodik, the Serb Presidency member and leader of the ruling party in Bosnia’s Republika Srpska (RS) entity, wrote to the President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), Carmel Agius, expressing his concern for Karadzic’s safety.

Karadzic, the wartime president of the RS, was sentenced to life in prison for various war crimes, including genocide committed in the eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica in 1995.
He is to serve the sentence in the UK but objected to the transfer arguing that his safety is jeopardised due to a high number of “Muslim extremists” serving their sentences in the country.
The IRMCT, however, rejected his objections.
“First of all, thank you for acknowledging the verdict against war criminal Radovan Karadzic in a letter to the president of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in The Hague (Mechanism),” reads the letter the Mothers of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Zepa sent to Dodik.
The NGO noted that Karadzic was sentenced for crimes committed with the goal of “exterminating the non-Serb population from the territory” controlled by Bosnian Serb forces.
“Serving of the sentence in Great Britain is for war criminal Radovan Karadzic exactly what he deserved, to say the least,” it said, adding that Dodik’s letter will not impact the decision to sent Karadzic to the UK but that it is “commendable for future relations” that he accepts the judgments of the Mechanism and is ready to implement them in BiH.
“We hope that you will propose to your party colleagues to support the adoption of the Law on the Prohibition of Denial of Genocide, Holocaust and Other War Crimes, which would certainly be the way to a better future in BiH,” the open letter said.
