Addressing officials at the change-of-command ceremony held today at NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, the new commander Fowler, said he assumes command with deep gratitude and a clear sense of purpose.

"In the coming months and years, we will work closely with our partners in Bosnia and Herzegovina to strengthen your Armed Forces and to expand joint training, improve your capabilities, and deepen the partnership between Bosnia and Herzegovina and NATO," he emphasized.

He also stressed that Bosnia and Herzegovina has already demonstrated what is possible when people choose cooperation over division.

He pointed to the significance of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which he said serve as a cornerstone of multiethnic integration, embodying a level of cooperation that is a benchmark for the entire region.

"This is more than success; it is an inspiring testament to everyday progress toward building a safer and more prosperous future for all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina," Brigadier General Fowler said.

Outgoing commander Brigadier General Matthew A. Valas said he had the privilege of spending the past two years with excellent partners in the ministries and Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, allies, the international community, and EUFOR, working on a range of defense and security sector challenges.

"I am confident that NATO Headquarters Sarajevo will continue working on difficult issues such as the defense budget, military property, armed forces readiness, and other challenges affecting all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity I was given to experience this wonderful country together with an outstanding team," he said.

Also addressing those present was Admiral George M. Wikoff, Commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples, who stressed that outgoing commander Brigadier General Valas and his team had done an exceptional job in Bosnia and Herzegovina and expressed confidence that the new commander Fowler, would also achieve excellent results.

He concluded that the long-standing partnership between NATO Headquarters, the European Union, the United Nations, and Bosnia and Herzegovina has resulted in an impressive list of achievements within diverse but focused goals.

The new Commander of NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, Brigadier General James C. Fowler, comes from the U.S. Army Western Hemisphere Command.

He has led combat missions ranging from company to brigade level and also has significant humanitarian experience. He graduated from Francis Marion University, earned a master's degree in administration from Central Michigan University, and obtained a Master of Science degree in national security strategy from the National War College.
