Annual inflation in Republika Srpska climbed to 4.9 per cent in March, up from 3.5 per cent the previous month, driven by a sharp rise in service costs across the board. Data from the RS Institute of Statistics reveals that while annual food price growth remained relatively modest at 1.9 per cent, other essential sectors experienced significant hikes compared to March last year.

Oglas

Household budgets are facing renewed pressure as electricity prices rose by an average of 12.1 per cent, while water costs increased by 8.9 per cent. The transport sector also saw a notable jump of 9.1 per cent over the past twelve months. Childcare costs continue to be a significant burden for families, with preschool education prices rising by 11.3 per cent. This sector has seen a consistent annual increase of approximately 10 per cent over the last five years. In private nurseries, monthly fees can now reach 700 Bosian marks (approx. €358), creating a stark disparity with public facilities.

Consumer protection associations have warned that these costs primarily impact young couples managing mortgages whilst facing the constant strain of daily price hikes. Although local authority subsidies exist, they are reportedly failing to bridge the gap. In Banja Luka, public nursery fees recently rose from 165 marks (approx. €84) to 210 marks (approx. €107), yet private options still average around 550 marks (approx. €281). Despite these pressures, authorities currently have no declared plans to expand the capacity of public kindergartens.

Healthcare and leisure costs spiking

The most dramatic increase was recorded in hospital services, which surged by an average of 139.1 per cent. This trend, consistent since the start of the year, follows a decision by the RS Health Insurance Fund to increase co-payment amounts for daily hospital treatment. Beyond healthcare, other sectors also saw upward movement in March as travel packages rose by an average of 20.3 per cent, postal services became 8.4 per cent more expensive, and restaurant and hotel services increased by 5.9 per cent.

Strained household budgets

The RS Trade Union Confederation reported today that the total trade union consumption basket for March reached 2,884.95 marks (approx. €1,475). Notably, 71 per cent of this total was required solely to cover the costs of food and housing. In response to these figures, it is worth noting that the RS Government implemented a decision on 21 March to limit profit margins on several basic foodstuffs and medicines in an attempt to curb the rising cost of living.
