Christian Schmidt, the international peace envoy, welcomed the constitutional changes passed at the Bosnia's lower level of authority, which recognised the equality of the ethnic Serbs, the official status of the Serbian language and Cyrillic script as well as the Bosnian language as an official language.
The constitutional changes took place in the Posavina Canton, one of ten cantons in Bosnia's Federation entity, where the Bosniaks and the Croats are majority. Bosnian ethnic Serbs are majority in other entity, Republika Srpska.
Schmidt, who is the final interpreter of the Dayton Peace Accords – the peace deal which ended the conflict of the 1990s and introduced the country's constitutional setup, said that the upholding of the rule of law is the duty of all levels of authority.
“Posavina Cantonal Assembly has fulfilled that duty by taking the decision yesterday to implement the outstanding obligation stemming from the 2018 Judgement of the Federation Constitutional Court,” said Schmidt's office, officially the Office of the High Representative.
He called on the West Herzegovina cantonal authorities to do its duty as well and to uphold the law and fully implement the Federation Constitutional Court’s judgement.
