The amendments come into effect after being confirmed last week by the House of Peoples of the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina, following earlier approval by the House of Representatives.

The changes specifically target reckless driving, including repeatedly running red lights, severe speeding violations and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Severe penalties will also apply to overtaking on a solid line or for driving with a blood alcohol concentration above 1.5‰, or under the influence of narcotics or other psychoactive substances.

Fines of up to 3,000 convertible marks (around €1,500) are foreseen, while if reckless driving results in a traffic accident, the penalty increases to up to €2,500.

For repeat offenders, police will be able to immediately revoke driving licences, as well as seize vehicles, which may later be permanently confiscated by court order.

Fines of up to €200 are imposed for minor offences such as not wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone while driving.
