Bosnia sees marginal export growth amid rising trade deficit

Bosnia and Herzegovina recorded exports totaling 4.15 billion Bosnian marks (approx. € 2.12 billion) during the first quarter of 2026, marking a slight increase of 0.5 percent compared to the same period in 2025. Data released by the Agency for Statistics of BiH reveals that imports also rose, reaching 7.25 billion marks (approx. € 3.71 billion), a 0.9 percent climb year-on-year.

These figures place the country's national import-export coverage at 57.3 percent, with the total foreign trade goods deficit reaching 3.1 billion marks (approx. € 1.59 billion).

Trade dynamics within the CEFTA region showed a downward trend. Exports to CEFTA partners fell by 8.7 percent to 643 million marks (approx. € 329 million), while imports from the region decreased by 3.9 percent to 849 million marks (approx. € 434 million). Consequently, the export-to-import coverage for CEFTA trade was recorded at 75.8 percent.

In contrast, trade with the European Union showed signs of expansion. Exports to EU member states rose by 5.7 percent, reaching 3.21 billion marks (approx. € 1.64 billion). Imports from the EU also saw a modest increase of 0.9 percent, totaling 4.22 billion marks (approx. € 2.16 billion). The coverage of imports by exports in trade with the EU stood at 76.0 percent for the three-month period.
