Austrian politician from the NEOS party and Member of the European Parliament, Helmut Brandstatter, told FENA that the election results in Hungary have implications beyond that country’s borders, especially for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"A change in the political course in Budapest could mean a noticeable weakening of Milorad Dodik, who has so far largely relied on the support of Viktor Orban. Orban was considered one of his closest allies within Europe," Brandstatter said.

He added that the elections send a clear message that many people in the region still expect commitment to Europe and European values.

"This is something that political actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina must finally take seriously. It is long past time for Bosnian politicians to accept the fact that a large part of the population supports closer European integration," he emphasized.

Brandstatter warned that a political signal alone is not enough.

"For Bosnia and Herzegovina to truly move in that direction, significant preparatory work is needed, implementing reforms, ensuring institutional stability, and demonstrating readiness for cooperation across ethnic and political divisions. Only then can the country credibly work toward a European future," he concluded.
