On that day, tribute is paid to the victims, while Ottawa reaffirms its commitment to promoting truth, justice, and a culture of remembrance, while condemning genocide denial, according to a statement from the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada (IGC).
The Mayor of Ottawa annually proclaims July 11 as the official day of remembrance for the murder of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys. Canadian authorities at all levels support preserving the memory of the Srebrenica genocide, with the Bosnian-Herzegovinian community playing a significant role in cooperation with the Institute for Research of Genocide Canada.
This year, Canada’s central commemoration for the victims of the Srebrenica genocide will be held on July 11 in Windsor in front of the first memorial dedicated to victims of the Srebrenica genocide in the diaspora.
''Recognizing the importance of this event for the future of Bosnian-Herzegovinian citizens in Ottawa through justice and truth, I, Mark Sutcliffe, Mayor of the City of Ottawa, hereby proclaim July 11, 2026, as Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day in Ottawa,'' the proclamation states.
