The US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina strongly condemned the latest adoption of controversial laws in the entity parliament of Bosnia's Republika Srpska entity, calling them "unconstitutional legislation."
Reminding of an earlier statement of State Department spokesperson, the Embassy said the US would “firmly oppose any actions by local BiH leaders that would undermine BiH's security and stability.”
“We meant what we said. We condemn the unconstitutional and anti-Dayton legislation the Republika Srpska National Assembly passed last night. We expect local leaders to immediately stop engaging in activities that undermine the Dayton Peace Agreement and BiH’s constitutional and legal order,” the Embassy posted on X.
The statement comes a day after the entity parliament in Republika Srpska, one of two Bosnia's semi-autonomous entities, adopted laws challenging state institutions in that part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The legislation was passed following the first-instance verdict against Milorad Dodik, Republika Srpska president, who was tried for separatist actions.
Dodik said on several occasions recently that “circumstances have changed” for the Serb-majority entity, thus justifying the passing of the controversial laws.
At the session of Republika Srpska National Assembly on Thursday, Dodik boasted that the previous US administration called the Assembly's moves secessionist and that now the only reaction from the State Department regarding the sentence against him was that the actions were “acknowledged”.
However, the Embassy's statement now confirms a clear position towards the unconstitutional activities of the authorities in the RS entity.
