Following recent reports circulating across various media platforms, the European Union Force (EUFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina has issued a statement clarifying its mission and role in the country.
EUFOR emphasized that:
- In accordance with the Dayton Peace Agreement and the mandate given by the United Nations, it has been operating for two decades in support of Bosnia and Herzegovina's authorities to maintain a safe and secure environment.
- EUFOR remains impartial and does not engage in political debates.
- The mission operates strictly within its mandate, fully respecting Bosnia and Herzegovina's legal framework and international law.
- EUFOR will continue to act transparently, ensuring the protection of the population and maintaining a safe and secure environment.
- Any claims suggesting a different mission for Operation ALTHEA are false and misleading.
This statement comes amid an increased EUFOR presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina, following a period of heightened political tensions and unconstitutional actions from the Republika Srpska entity. The reinforcement aims to uphold stability and peace in the country.
Meanwhile, a controversy emerged after Croatian Member of the European Parliament Zeljana Zovko claimed that EUFOR’s role in Bosnia and Herzegovina was solely to protect diplomatic personnel, rather than the general population. Several media outlets circulated video footage of her remarks during a European Parliament session.
Her claims were swiftly refuted by Zuzana Michalcova Sutiakova, Director for the Western Balkans at the European External Action Service (EEAS). Sutiakova emphasized that EUFOR’s increased presence in Bosnia and Herzegovina is intended to ensure a secure environment for all citizens, not just foreign diplomats.
