It is no longer enough to only speak about the support to the Western Balkans, Brussels has to do something specifically about it, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said in Sarajevo on Tuesday, presenting also an offer of his country to send a unit of border police officers to help Bosnia and Herzegovina protect its borders from illegal migrations.

Hungary's diplomat who met with his Bosnian counterpart, FM Bisera Turkovic, said that people of his country live next to the Western Balkans and they find it important to have peace, safety and development rule this region.

“We know exactly that this requires the acceleration of Euro-Atlantic integration. Because your security and development are also the guarantees of our security and development. This is why the support to the region of Western Balkans will always be in the focus of Hungary's foreign policy,” he underlined.

Szijjarto also said that the region is under dual pressure, which includes the ongoing pandemic and the issue of illegal migrations.

“I believe it is not enough to only speak about the support to the Western Balkans, but that the time has come for Brussels to do something specifically about that,” he added.

As for illegal migrations, Hungary's FM stressed that this was another factor increasing the risks of spreading the virus, adding that BiH is clearly struggling with this problem.

“Hungary is ready to send a unit of 15 border police officers to Bosnia and Herzegovina, to help the country protect its borders,” he said and concluded that Hungary will continue supporting Bosnia's Euro-Atlantic integration.

Szijjarto earlier handed over a donation of more than 40,000 PCR tests as a sign of solidarity with people of BiH.
