A group of citizens plans to gather in Sarajevo, on Monday, at noon outside the Embassy of the Republic of Poland to protest the potential failure to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his planned visit to that country on January 27. Netanyahu is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes in Gaza.

The protesters are calling on the Polish government to revoke the resolution passed on January 9, 2025, which permits high-ranking Israeli officials to participate in Holocaust Remembrance Day events, including Netanyahu’s visit to Auschwitz. The group asserts that as a member of the ICC, Poland has a legal obligation to enforce all ICC arrest warrants.

“This resolution highlights double standards and selective enforcement of international criminal law, which is unacceptable,” the group stated. “At a time marked by rampant militarism, imperialism, and capitalism, such actions normalize genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, pushing humanity toward ruin.”

The group has been organizing regular gatherings in Sarajevo in recent days, reading the names of those killed in Gaza to draw attention to the ongoing crisis.

The protesters emphasized the importance of countries standing with victims rather than shielding alleged war criminals. “International criminal law must be universal and non-selective. All individuals wanted by the ICC for war crimes must be arrested and handed over. No war criminal should be granted immunity or protection under any circumstances,” they added.

Meanwhile, a ceasefire was implemented on Sunday at 11:55 am local time. Under the agreement, the first individuals released were three hostages from Gaza. This marks the beginning of a 42-day truce, during which 33 hostages are expected to be freed, alongside hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Critics have highlighted that many of these Palestinian prisoners are held under “administrative detention,” a controversial practice where detainees face no formal charges or trials but can remain imprisoned indefinitely. The ceasefire offers a rare opportunity for dialogue amidst a deeply entrenched conflict.

The Sarajevo protest aims to underscore the urgency of holding all alleged war criminals accountable, reinforcing the principle that justice must prevail over political expedience.
